Engine Light On
In Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the engine light is a key indicator for both engine and transmission system faults. Unlike some vehicles, most Mercedes-Benz models do not have a separate transmission warning light. Instead, the engine management light illuminates for issues within either system. Occasionally, a display warning may appear on the center screen of the dashboard, but in 90% of cases, the engine light serves as the primary alert for both engine and transmission faults.
DIAGNOSTIC PROCESS
When the engine light turns on, it’s essential to conduct a diagnostic scan. Mercedes-Benz vehicles can generate anywhere from 500 to 2,000 potential fault codes, making it impossible to accurately identify the problem without using a diagnostic computer. At Mesede Motors, our process begins with connecting the vehicle to the diagnostic machine to retrieve the active fault code.
Once the fault code is identified, we follow a detailed step-by-step process that involves processing the Fault Code with the following steps:
- Testing the vehicle’s wiring, plugs, and connectors
- Inspecting for shorts in the system
- Checking sensors and other related components
This thorough procedure allows us to accurately determine the underlying issue and provide you with a detailed quotation for repairs.
IMPACT ON DIAGNOSTICS
It’s important to note that certain fault codes, such as those related to engine misfires or power reduction, can limit our ability to test other components of the engine or transmission. For example:
- If the engine light is on due to a misfire, the vehicle’s drivability, smoothness, and engine performance cannot be fully assessed until the misfire issue is resolved.
- If the vehicle experiences reduced power, it may enter limp mode, restricting further tests on other engine or transmission components until the primary issue is addressed.
Therefore, resolving the initial fault code is crucial to allow a complete diagnosis of the vehicle. Until the primary fault is addressed, it prevents us from fully testing and assessing the remaining systems.
OUR RECOMMENDATION
At Mesede Motors, we recommend booking your vehicle in for a thorough diagnostic procedure rather than just a basic diagnostic test. While a diagnostic test will reveal the fault code, only around 10-20% of codes can be definitively diagnosed from the initial reading. Most issues require further testing and processing to accurately confirm and resolve the fault.
