SERVICE LIGHT ON
At Mesede Motors, we understand that servicing a Mercedes-Benz involves more than just a routine check-up. With the evolution of modern Mercedes-Benz vehicles, two primary services are used to maintain your vehicle’s performance and longevity:
- Service A
- Service B.
These correspond to what used to be known as a “minor service” and a “major service”, respectively.
What Are Service A and Service B?
- Service A is generally considered the minor service.
- Service B is the major service, which involves more comprehensive checks and maintenance.
However, both services can have additional checks and tasks based on the vehicle’s requirements, which are often indicated by numbering or lettering systems following the service label. For instance, you might see ‘A1’ to ‘A10’ or additional letters like ‘AF’, ‘AB’, or ‘AC’, all of which specify extra checks, required at that specific service interval. Similarly, for Service B, you might encounter codes like ‘B1’ to ‘B9’ or combinations like ‘BF’, indicating additional steps needed.
Understanding the Service Codes
Each vehicle displays a service code that alerts you to the next scheduled maintenance (e.g., Service A3 or B5). When we connect your Mercedes-Benz to our diagnostic computer, we also receive a workshop code, which is a specific alphanumeric combination that deciphers the exact tasks and checks required during the service.
These codes are then input into the Mercedes-Benz Workshop Information System, which provides us with the precise additional checks needed. This system ensures that your vehicle gets the proper care, whether it’s a basic maintenance item or a more intricate service requirement.
Why Service Estimates Can Vary
At Mesede Motors, we provide initial estimates for Service A and Service B. However, the actual service cost may vary depending on the extra checks and components that are required, which we identify after the diagnostic process. Some models, particularly the newer ones, have expensive components that needs to be serviced or replaced at specific intervals, which can influence the final cost.
For example, a diesel filters typically require replacement every 60,000 to 80,000km. In South Africa, the lower quality of diesel means these filters tend to clog up sooner, so we recommend replacing them more frequently—around every 40,000 km.
Mesede Motors’ Comprehensive Approach to Servicing
At Mesede Motors, we go the extra mile. For every service, whether it’s a Service A or Service B, we perform all the checks typically reserved for a major B service, at no extra cost to the customer. Our goal is to ensure your vehicle is fully inspected and maintained to the highest standard.
Our comprehensive checklist covers all essential service components, including:
- Filters (Oil, Air, Fuel, Cabin/Dust)
- Belts and Lubricating Components
- Brakes and Undercarriage
- Suspension, Bushes, and Control Arms
While we are thorough, it’s important to note that no service can cover every single component of your vehicle. However, we strive to offer a detailed and in-depth inspection like a holiday inspection on every service, ensuring peace of mind before we issue a final quote.
Mercedes-Benz Service Intervals
For Mercedes-Benz vehicles manufactured after 2008, the service interval is based on either annual servicing or a mileage limit of 15,000km to 20,000km, depending on the vehicle model.
- If your vehicle doesn’t reach the mileage limit within a year, it will still need to be serviced annually to prevent engine oil deterioration, which occurs naturally over time.
- AMG vehicles are always set to a 15,000km or annual service interval.
- Diesel vehicles, on the other hand, often have a 20,000km interval due to the different properties of diesel fuel.
Regardless of whether your vehicle is driven frequently or only occasionally, regular servicing is crucial to maintaining the engine’s performance. Modern Mercedes-Benz engines are built with smaller tolerances, meaning they rely on thinner oils to run efficiently. Contaminants from the fuel, even after a short drive, can degrade the oil, which is why timely oil and filter changes are essential.
